Then I figured getting the word out has to better than sitting here being sick over the whole thing. It makes me really sad and disgusted. I hadn't read your post on it til just now. Sorry I have been really behind reading the blogs I follow lately. I promise to do better. It's just inexcusable to me that these murderers got away with it. Ugh!!! It is so sad, yet makes me so angry. I can only imagine the stories like this that don't make the news and get covered up. If all the birds in the forest sang the same song, we would not listen. Yet when all sing, the heavens open and we look up to them singing and see the light shining through.
Always Your Friend, b. :-)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02903461479406800615noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8871433400980375714.post-33254044620453547702014-01-18T11:21:34.118-08:002014-01-18T11:21:34.118-08:00Wow! It's unfathomable for me that the officers were acquitted.
Here, the police officers some special training on how to deal with the mentally ill. How extensive it is I don't know, but I'm sure stigma will always enter in when officers face a mentally ill man. From day 1 officers are trained to expect the "worst" from certain people.
In York Region, ON, there is a special unit that people can call, can';t remember what the program is called. A mental health social worker, a specially trained, plain clothed police officer will respond and will try to defuse the situation in any best ways possible.
In Canada, we are the very forefront of mental health. In particular, ON, the province where I live, there are many resources available.
Still, sadly, I see and/or experience stigma.
People need to be educated, we need to talk more about mental illness.
For instance, on Feb. 28, a special day to call in or text on the subject of special initiatives for mental health. Set up by Bell Media, a charge of $0.05 will be added and the proceeds will be donated to a program educating the general public on mental health.
I wish someone or some organization would initiate the search for the cure of mental illness(es).
Thank you for sharing this nightmarish story.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09230794803392536111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8871433400980375714.post-34225019352220617862014-01-18T11:13:30.221-08:002014-01-18T11:13:30.221-08:00Thank you very Brian, and I totally agree. We don't want to deal with unpleasantness, and we expect those that need to help to just disappear. It is truly sickening. iT has to stop. These people are human beings and deserve to treated as such and I speak for myself as well. I am mentally ill. I am not dangerous. I am not a criminal. And yet I get the same glances. The smae fear in others faces when I openly talk about it. It's ridiculous, really. This has to stop. Human beings are human beings and if Mr. Thomas had been an animal and not a mental illness sufferer they treated that way, those officers would be in prison. How sad and sickening is that thought.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10237058236131496554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8871433400980375714.post-8557619976567128812014-01-18T11:01:55.567-08:002014-01-18T11:01:55.567-08:00Stigma is the drug often used to placate our own i...Stigma is the drug often used to placate our own internal guilt. To justify the treatment of others and believe we are not them. Tragically, in the end of our own intolerance and shame we forget the very basic of emotions. Empathy. The plight of the mentally ill are disregarded as the trash we dispose of each day,not to be seen. Ignored. Someone else's problem. Sub-human and not worth our time. Our neighbors, our sons and daughters and even our parents and grandparents.
Strangely, we spend more on garbage collection in many cities than on the homeless or the mentally ill. Often tucking them away in prisons and jails without the compassion of a wounded animal. Interesting to note, our laws concerning child abuse arose from laws for the cruelty of animals.
We have come so far and yet we have sunk so low to the very depths of Hades when it comes to the people we throw away. Will we throw ourselves away when we are no longer useful? Time will be our judges, our jury from our loins.
God help us all....... b. :-{Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02903461479406800615noreply@blogger.com
